The “Festival Ardine – 6ème édition” project by Aïcha CHIGHALY (MAURITANIA) | Call #11

Project description:

This project comes in a festival that advocates the rehabilitation of traditional instruments from Mauritania and its neighboring countries as well as the important place of women in music.

The musicians of Mauritania who constitute the living memory of our societies play and use original instruments including, among others, the Tidinit, the Tamtam and the Ardine. The Ardine is an instrument used specifically by Mauritanian female musicians and is original in its design and the nature of the sounds it emits between the fingers of the musicians.

Artist’s biography:

Aïcha Chighaly is a Mauritanian singer and ardin player, a worthy representative of the Azâwân tradition, the music of the iggawins (griots) made of religious praise, praise of warrior lords, satirical and love songs. Introduced to the songs of the Moorish music repertoire by her father and to the ardin (Moorish harp) by her mother, Aïcha Chighaly began by accompanying her parents in celebrations, and set up her own group made up of her brothers and her sister in law. Since then, she is very often solicited to give concerts or participate in local and international festivals.
